Mobile Sanitation

Landustrie developed the mobile sanitation unit (MobiSan) which is extremely suitable for use in slums and refugee camps.

The toilet uses a minimal amount of water and does not need to be connected to a main water supply or a sewerage system. Faeces and urine are collected separately in the Mobisan unit.  After a drying process the result is dried, pathogen-free human waste which can be used again as manure for vegetable gardens in the slums or farms elsewhere.

In 2009 a MobiSan demonstration project was started in Pooke se Bos, an informal settlement in Cape Town, South Africa. Until today the new installed sanitation system has been functioning successfully with a very high user satisfaction.
Recently an updated version of the Mobisan has been manufactured. A prototype of this is used for demonstrations by various municipalities and townships. The prototype consists of smaller toilet units that are easier to transport and fit. Depending on the size of the township, several units are linked together. MobiSan units are produced locally in order to keep costs low and to stimulate local employment. One unit consists of a row of toilets installed in a container.
